London Olympics: US vs China Total Medal Count

The United States and China are embroiled in a bitter battle for supremacy in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.

Amid all the talk of Great Britain's gold rush, it's been easy to overlook the fierce battle going on at the top of the Olympic medals table.

Four years ago in Beijing, China the world's most populous nation finished first for the first time in history with 51 golds, the United States some way behind with 36. Americans hoped this might be a one-off inspired by the Chinese playing host to the Games.

With one day of competition left at the London Games, the U.S has locked up the overall medal race and is holding off the Chinese in the chase for the most gold.

Track and field, Swimming, women's soccer and basketball, gymnast Aly Raisman and Serena Williams  have all been highlights for United States Olympic Committee chairman Larry Probst.

Bronze medals from Janay DeLoach in the women's long jump and Carmelita Jeter in the 200 meters helped push the United States tally on the track to 20 medals. That's far and away the best effort by a nation in athletics; Russia is second to the U.S. with nine medals.
