Waterproof Phone

water proof iphone

Sploosh! According to a recent online survey, nearly one in five people have dropped a smartphone in the toilet. But there’s good news: A surface treatment from a California startup called Liquipel could protect your Phone against accidental dunkings. Just ship your device to the company’s Santa Ana HQ. We sent in an HTC Nexus One and a Motorola Talkabout walkie-talkie for treatment. Amazingly, both survived repeated dunks in a sink—not splashes but full immersions—before finally giving up the ghost in a hot tub. Liquipel will place it in a vacuum chamber, which is then filled with a proprietary vapor that settles into every nook and cranny to create a super-hydrophobic coating just a few molecules thick.

According to an article over on TUAW, by way of Liquipel, this new waterproofing tech is available right now, and although not meant for taking your smartphone deep sea diving, does offer protection without a case for those that are often around water.

How in the hell is this iPhone still working even though it's constantly being drenched in water? Liquipel. It's a magical invisible coating that's applied to your phone (or any electronic device) that makes both the exterior and interior components waterproof. Uhh... this is AWESOME.

Liquipel is not simply a case for your iPhone. It is a patent-pending process of coating a device inside and out with a "nano" coating that is impervious to moisture. No, I wouldn't take your iPhone SCUBA diving or anything, but if you're accident prone, this may be just the thing to save yourself another embarrassing trip to the Apple Store.

The process apparently has no effect on features such as battery charging or network strength. It also does not seem to affect the look or feel of your treated device.
One downside is that you have to send your phone off to have the process done, though turnaround time is a mere 1-2 days. It costs $59 and works for all types of electronic devices.
