Acer has unveiled the world's thinnest laptop at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
The Aspire S5, backed by a $300 million (£194m) investment from Intel, measures in at just 15mm thick with a 13.3" screen.
The Aspire S5, released under Acer's Ultrabooks line, is powered by an Intel 22nm Ivy Bridge processor and includes HDMI and USB3 support. Full hardware specs and pricing details are yet to be confirmed.
Acer's new machine is 2mm thinner than Apple's Macbook Air, yet weights an identical 1.35kg. It is also the first non-Apple laptop to make use of a Thunderbolt port for high-speed data transfer.
"The Ultrabook is much more than just a product segment," said Jim Wong, president of Acer Inc. "It's a new trend that will become the mainstream for mobile PCs, and customers will see the unique features gradually extended across Acer's notebook family."
Acer also showcased its new Iconia A700 Tab, the world's first tablet device to pack a quad-core processor and a full-HD 1080p display. Further details of the 10.1" slate will be revealed later at the event.
The Acer Aspire S5 is expected to come with the Windows 8 operating system on board. It will be released during Q2, 2012.
